Care Centre is a people management platform developed specifically for care homes and care home groups. BrightHR is HR software for small and medium businesses from Bright HR Limited of Manchester, part of the Peninsula group, sold alongside an employment-law advice line; packages are sized from start-ups to 250+ employees, and healthcare is one of eight sectors listed.
The main difference is one of scope. BrightHR provides HR administration and employment-law support for many kinds of business, with a care-sector content product, CQC Navigator. Care Centre combines HR and compliance with the rota, attendance, leave, communication, survey and maintenance requirements of residential care.
More than an HR system
Care Centre brings rota planning, time and attendance, leave, timesheets and payroll, HR onboarding and compliance, policies, communication and recognition, surveys and maintenance onto one staff record and staff app.
BrightHR provides holiday planning, shifts and rotas, absence, timesheets, document storage, an expense tracker, performance management and recognition, with clocking in a separate free application, Blip.
For organisations whose main requirement is HR administration with employment-law support, this may provide everything required; Care Centre takes a broader approach within a single sector.
HR & compliance
This is the area of greatest overlap. Care Centre includes HR onboarding and compliance within the platform: onboarding covers DBS checks, right-to-work documentation, references and training certificates, with configurable steps, fields and per-document reminder lead times. Employees complete onboarding from their phone, managers approve field by field, progress is monitored on a per-home compliance matrix, and policies are version-controlled with acknowledgement records.
BrightHR approaches this from the document side: unlimited storage, written templates, documents staff read, acknowledge and sign with a timestamp against each one, reminders on key dates and training renewals; its healthcare page covers safeguarding, DBS and right-to-work evidence.
Based on its published documentation, BrightHR does not describe phone-completed onboarding, field-by-field approval, per-document expiry lead times or a per-home compliance matrix.
One company, multiple homes
Care home groups need group-wide standards while homes work to their own requirements; Care Centre is structured around that model. Settings are set at company level and configured per home — role levels, leave limits, budgets, pay rates, clock-in settings, shift rules and approvers — and staff working across homes use one record and login.
BrightHR groups employees into teams by department, reporting line or site, with permissions assigned to all sites or specific ones; company-level rules with per-home overrides are not described in its published documentation.
Rota planning designed around care roles
Care home rotas must account for roles, skills, contracted hours, availability, leave and staffing budgets. Care Centre plans rotas around care roles such as nurses, senior carers and carers, so the skill mix is visible as the week is built. Contracted hours are tracked against each employee, availability and preferences inform planning, Working Time rules including opt-outs are applied, and bank and agency workers sit on the same rota.
BrightHR creates rotas in a table layout, assigns them across days and staff, lets selected employees accept or decline and releases unfilled shifts first come, first served. Planning by care role is not described in its published documentation.
Rota planning & budgets
Both show what a rota costs, but they budget differently. Care Centre builds staffing budgets into the rota as hours per role, per day, per home, and homes can restrict the rota to that budget, so a shift over a role’s hours is prevented rather than flagged.
BrightHR shows the cost of each shift as it is scheduled, which suits organisations monitoring labour cost; Care Centre is structured around managing care-role hours and budgets together.
Time & attendance, timesheets & payroll
Both record attendance and prepare hours for payroll. Care Centre allows staff to clock in at a shared tablet or their own phone within a defined location; whether an employee may clock in without a rostered shift is a setting, and managers are alerted to no-shows and missed clock-outs.
Additional time is held for approval before becoming overtime, and clocking feeds a timesheet with a visual status system. Payroll periods run weekly through to 4-4-5, exported as CSV or XLSX, including a Moneysoft-ready format.
BrightHR clocks staff in through Blip, free to its users, using GPS geofences, QR codes and any device, with retrospective clock-ins and adjustment requests approved by a manager. Its timesheets compare scheduled patterns against worked hours and apply rounding rules; overtime is approved as a request.
Based on its published documentation, BrightHR does not describe a clock-in rule tied to the rostered shift, a hold on unrostered clock-ins, a live no-show alert or additional time held at clock-out.
Leave management
Both allow employees to request leave and managers to control availability. Care Centre shows entitlement in days or hours and takes requests from the phone; once approved, leave updates the rota, timesheet and payroll. Homes can also limit how many people in particular roles are away at once, set across a group and adjusted per home.
BrightHR provides a holiday planner with automatic allowance calculations, clash alerts, in-app approval and a team calendar; limits by role per site are not described in its published documentation.
Staff communication & recognition
Care Centre includes communication and recognition in the same staff app: colleagues can be recognised from a phone, with recognition tied to organisational values; homes publish news, events, polls and priority messages requiring acknowledgement; and one-to-one and group chat is included.
Posts can include photographs, uploaded video and YouTube or Vimeo links, so a home can share an event, a celebration or news from the home with the whole team. Recognition can be given as a thank-you, a star, congratulations, a work-anniversary message or employee of the month, and chat messages can include photographs.
BrightHR provides Praise, peer-to-peer recognition with customisable value tags, points, badges, a live company-wide leaderboard and rewards; a company feed with priority posts and team chat are not described in its published documentation.
Staff, resident & family surveys
Care Centre includes anonymous staff surveys alongside resident and family surveys. Results can be analysed using AI for sentiment, themes and leadership-versus-frontline differences, and findings developed into action plans in a You said · We said · We did format; a pulse question can also be asked at clock-out.
BrightHR does not provide comparable survey and action-planning functionality, based on its published documentation.
Maintenance & compliance
Care Centre also extends into the building’s operation: maintenance requests carry photographs, checks are scheduled by room or asset, and an asset register holds fire, gas, electrical, PAT, LOLER and legionella records with expiry dates.
BrightHR addresses the adjacent area through health & safety software: risk assessments from 600+ templates, accident and near-miss reporting, hazardous substances and method statements. Maintenance requests, an asset register and statutory certificates are not described in its published documentation.
Advice, documents & training content
This is where BrightHR is strongest and Care Centre provides nothing equivalent. Its Enhanced and Full packages include unlimited 24/7 HR and employment-law advice from UK-based experts, law updates and optional indemnity insurance, with hundreds of expertly written contracts, handbooks, factsheets and templates.
For the care sector, CQC Navigator adds e-learning meeting the 16 fundamental care standards, care policies, checklists and posters, 600+ risk-assessment templates and 24/7 guidance from qualified experts.
Care Centre provides no advice line, indemnity insurance, template library or training content.
AI
Care Centre uses AI selectively within administrative and communication tasks rather than operational decisions: recognition messages, survey creation, survey analysis and staff-list import. According to Care Centre, personal information is redacted before relevant import processing and customer data is not used to train the underlying AI model. AI is deliberately not used for rotas, clocking, payroll or leave, and credits are included at £25 per month.
BrightHR directs its AI at advice: BRAINBOX+, introduced in March 2026, answers HR, health & safety and payroll questions from a library of expert-reviewed documents.
Pricing & contract
The platforms use different pricing structures. Care Centre is priced per registered bed rather than per employee:
- CareRota: £6 per bed per month
- CareHR: £6 per bed per month
- People Management Platform: £10 per bed per month
- Setup: £0
- Contract: monthly rolling with 30 days’ notice
The full platform combines CareRota and CareHR with CareChat and CareMaintenance, so staffing numbers do not affect the price: a 60-bed home with 80 employees is charged for 60 beds, not 80 users.
BrightHR uses a per-employee monthly subscription. On its published calculator, read 14 Sep 2026, the five-employee default is £16.67, £21.20 and £31.30 for Core, Enhanced and Full; at 80 employees it returned £3.90, £7.50 and £14.60 per employee, or £312.00, £600.00 and £1,168.00 per month excluding tax — a browser reading to be re-taken before publication. Its pricing page carries fixed terms of “24, 36 and 60 months fixed term with 36 months being available to purchase online.”
The per-employee model may give a smaller organisation a lower entry cost; at 60 beds and 80 staff the two converge at £600 per month, leaving a difference of shape rather than price.
Implementation, training & support
Both platforms are cloud-based and quick to implement. Care Centre requires no proprietary hardware — staff use their own phones and standard Android tablets — and configuration, staff-data import and live training are provided without a setup fee, with support from a UK-based team working only with care homes.
BrightHR provides unlimited onboarding support and a fixed price as an organisation grows, 30–45 minute demonstrations, and support by phone, SMS, live chat and WhatsApp with an AI help centre; its rota planner is free through BrightHR Lite.
Where Care Centre may be the better fit
Care Centre is likely to suit care organisations looking for more than HR administration, particularly where they:
- Want rota planning by care role against an hours budget per role, per day, per home
- Want clock-in rules tied to the rostered shift, with extra time approved before payroll
- Operate multiple homes and want group-wide standards with home-level settings
- Want onboarding completed on the employee’s phone with a per-home compliance matrix
- Want rota, attendance, leave, payroll, HR, compliance and maintenance on one record
- Want anonymous staff, resident and family surveys with action planning
- Prefer pricing per registered bed, monthly rolling, rather than per employee on a fixed term
Where BrightHR may be the better fit
BrightHR may be more appropriate where:
- 24/7 employment-law advice, law updates and indemnity insurance are a priority, which Care Centre does not provide
- A template library of contracts, handbooks and policies is required, with timestamped acknowledgement and signing
- Care-sector e-learning, policies, checklists and risk-assessment templates are needed, as in CQC Navigator
- An organisation is not solely a care provider and employs staff in other sectors
- Health & safety software, expense tracking and recruitment are required alongside HR
